Die Zauberflöte
Die Zauberflöte opens tomorrow night! The Kassel production is all set in a rather magical attic. We three ladies appear from out of a false-back wardrobe, poke out from the chimney, and even break up through the floorboards. I am reliably informed that it is a sell-out every night.
Dritte Dame |
Not only is this my first German opera in Germany (complete with dialogue!), it is also my first Wiederaufnahme ('revival production'). I received the DVD before Christmas, so that I could learn all the staging and choreography, and then a revival director is on hand for the week before to rehearse it with the new and returning members of cast.
Unfortunately, the first week of January is peak chest infection season, and about three quarters of the cast were off sick. My first rehearsal consisted of a director, assistant, souffler, pianist, conductor.....and me. I met my 1st Lady last night in the Generalprobe (dress rehearsal), and I will meet the Queen of the Night tomorrow....onstage. The funny thing is that I know it's all going to be fine, as all those I've come across working in Germany seem to be flexible and spontaneous performers, used to 'jumping in' (more about this to follow). It's going to be a blast!
